Feelings Are Facts
July 31 - Sept. 6, 2021
Opening reception: July 31, 3 - 6pm
Feelings Are Facts is the second exhibition presented at Poker Flats in summer 2021. The title is borrowed from the memoir of pioneering artist, dancer, and filmmaker Yvonne Rainer. Recounted with disarming directness and humility, Rainer’s story is one in which art and life were inseparable; she describes how the emergent ideals of minimalism and conceptualism were intertwined with the messiness of relationships, laboring bodies, and the peculiar rhythms of lives lived in search of artistic meaning.
The show brings together a group of artists whose methodical approaches to abstraction are suffused with references to and expressions of the strangeness of living in a human body, having desires and obsessions, seeking humor, intimacy, or release, and absorbing extrasensory and subconscious perceptions. United more by an approach or sensibility than any theme or technique, the works in this exhibition exist as both indexes of deliberate, intensive labor by the artists and as open-ended catalysts for vulnerable self-examination.
